Analysis of poem

Billy Collins is trying to tell the reader that having a birthday is one of the most exciting times of a child’s life.  The boy in the poem is turning ten and is now getting away from his childhood beliefs.  As he turns ten he looks back on his life and reflects on how he used to play as a pirate and pretend he was a prince.  As a child gets older they tend to part ways with what they used to believe and start to think like an older kid and do things older kids would do.  Collins captures childhood by saying how kids have vivid imaginations.  He writes how kids pretend they are a pirate sailing the seven seas, or a prince from the land of dragons.  He makes this poem effective by stating examples from a child’s childhood.

word definitions

the way the author is use the word beauty is by say the makeup an other skin care products make you beautiful.

the author uses the word denial by saying poeple who are emotionally unstable are in denial.

the author uses the word evil by saying it is what the devil looks like and what god thinks evil is .

1.  There are no other fresh ideas that pop out to me in the essay.   i would have defined the idea as a baseball player from New York.  there are not other ideas i can think of that are similar to Yankee.

2.  The allusions add examples to the word Yankee in the essay.  It gave a better understanding because it uses the word in real life things.

3.  The writer tells what other people think the word Yankee means and then gives the actually definition.  I donthink the writer dwelt to long on what a Yankee is not.

4.  the theseis to this essay i think is:In time, though, the idea that the word Yankee suggests has shrunk geographically until it is on the verge of extinction.

my spring break was really boreing.the only thing i did was play lacrosse everyday.  We had four games and won three of them.  We went to north carolina for two of the lacrosse gamesand beat twoprivite school teams who have won a state championchip in the last three years.  for easter i went to my dad cousins house and had easter dinner there.

a modest proposal

1. the thesis of the story is that the irish want poor people to breast feed their childeren for a year so it is cheaper to feed the babies.
2. Two hundred thousand couple whose wives are breeders; from which number I subtract thirty thousand couples who are able to maintain their own children, although I apprehend there cannot be so many, under the present distresses of the kingdom.
And even when they come to this age they will not yield above three pounds, or three pounds and half-a-crown at most on the exchange.
3.  after paragraph 10
4. poor irish rich english
5.  she does give real saterical ideas.
6.  the last paragraph shows how he really feels about the story
7.  he uses strong ideas and strange stories to get his point across.
8  i would use french names to hide the fact that they are babies.

i want a wife

1.  the thesis to this satire is I want a wife.

2.  the use of i want a wife if repeted so many times is it it getting the point across that this person really wants a wife.

3.  i dont think Brady really wants a wife because at the end of the story Brady say that if i get bored with the wife i have now i want to replace her with a new one.  this ideal sponce does not exist because this person Brady is talking about is perfect and no one is perfect.  i think brady wrote this to show what people think a wife is all about and what expectaions wives have.

4.  Brady defines wife to mean someone who does all of the work in the house and who take care of the childeren.  Brady organizies the services by putting them in way that a wife would do them in a real life.  i think brady is a little exagerating a bit on the characterization of a wife.  Bardy is saying what a perfect wife would be but no one is perfect and no one could do all of that work.  i think Brady want the readers to be upset with the story so the reader will know what not to expect when they get married.

5. Dear Brady,  i do admire your essay.  i think it shows what people think a wife is supossed to do for her family, and all of the things that were said are all lies.  No one person could do all the work that was said in the essay.  i think this is a very effective essay.

1. My narratinve does an ok job of involving the reader. I could try invoving
2.  My narrative does a good job of relating events in sequence.  I tryed to get all of the things i did in order of what happened
We went to the mall after we were finished eating our delicious peppered steak with steam broccoli and a tall cold glass of Pepsi , and I had to take Tyler with me.

Because it was cool Friday night with starts brightly shining in the sky, there were people waiting hours in line to get a table.

Again, during our delicious meal , my friends and I received strange, gross, and hateful looks from the others in the restaurant.

james thurber

the first one i read was the little girl and the wolf. i liked this one the best because i have always liked the story little red ridding hood and they ending was very funny.  the way James uses satire is he has the little girl shoot the wolf dead.

the next one i read was the bear.  it wasn't similar to any other stoty i have read. i liked it because it was funny, by having the bear get drunk every night and then have him get sober and ack all crazy.  james surprised me by having the bear do the same things when he was sober and when he was drunk.  he uses satire by having the bear do the same thing sober and drunk.

the last one i read was the birds and the foxes.  it din't renined me of any other story.  it wasn't similar to any other story i have read. it surprised me that all the birds got eaten by the foxes.  he uses satire by comparing it to our society's government.

there were three little pigs who built houses. one house was made of straw, another was made of stick and the last was made of brick.  a wolf came and was hungry for some pig.  it told the pig to let him in or i will blow your house down.  the pig didn't let him in. the pig ran to the stick house. the wolf said let me in or i will blow your house down.  the pigs ran to the brick house. the wolf said let me in or i will blow your house down.  he could not blow the house down because it was to strong.

fairy tale poem

That lion has big teeth and very big eyes.
I should run away from this lion.

this lion has very nice fur.
i hope the lion doesn't eat me.

this man is so weird looking.
what are these weird things coming from his body.

lets play some music.
you can be my back up singers.

get this damn bug out of my face.
i about to kill this annoying thing.

how is this rabbit talking to me
i though they could only hit a drum

i feel like this bed is a little to big
if i fall i probably will die

i hope a bear doesn't come out
that would be very bad.

poem
i hope nobody comes out and kidnaps me
if they do i hope is not a wolf.
if does i hope it doesn't follow me
to my grandma house.
i now my grandma make a delisuous apple pie
i think there is a wolf behind that tree
oh no there he is
i must run and run
to my grandma house
oh no don't eat my grandma
grandma is now dead

I read the real dirt in the nature theme.  I totallay agree with this person.  She wrote how she wanted to get away from dirt and farm land and move to the city.  As the years went on the dirt and land started to go away and replaced with more buildings.  Her point was to appriciate the land and to treasure it because someday it could all go away.  I think more people should be like her, go move somewhere you want but respect and take care of the earth beneath your feet.

I read the Kindness of Strangers in the good and evil theme.  i think that the habitat for humanity is without a dought the best service work there is.  I know many people who work with habitat for humanity and they have a great time helping people with no home.  If I ever get the chance to work with habitat for humanity I would go in a heartbeat.  The point to this story I think is, when someone is in poverty and doesen't have much to live off of then the weathery people should help out and give back to the people in need.

this i believe in the sports theme.  Two sisters who were very  close to each other ran almost everyday.  One day they went out on run and the one sister who was pregnent got hit by a car and died instentlly.  The wirter then wrote how life is like a relay race and that you should keep going.  When her sister got killed she was sad but she knew that it can't ruin her life.  I think a lot of people are not like this.  i think that people hold on to things way to long and it ruins their life.  If people were like this lady then people would be a lot more happy and enjoible to be around.

this i believe in the freedom theme.  A man from New York City who was born in California but is Indian stood outside Yankee Stadium and protested on the war in Iraq.  People yelled at him saying go back to where you where form.  he thought they were talking about california but instead they were talking about india.  i think that people are still very racist in the u.s.

poem

There was a boy named Anand who ate ice cream
He’s favorite flavor was mint coco chip
Every night this desert was in his dream
Woke up ran to the fridge and almost slipped
Anand opened the white door and saw nil
Mad at his parents for not feeding him
He drove to the store to get his great fill
He looked in the store to look for his gem
Surprised not seeing his delicious mint
He screamed to the top of his healthy lungs
As he ran home to sob he saw some flint
He picked it up and through it as it rung
Went through a window as glass falls hard down
Mad for not getting his favorite mint ground

Adam and George
As I walk through the golden sea of maize I imagine I am in a golden sea.  I find if I deject my direction it is perpendicular to the rows.  I see myself as a buoy in the sea of gold as I try to tether myself to the earth.  The hair on my epidermis stands up as disperse through the cornstalks.  The aroma odor of the corn field nags at my senses, like a dog pawing at the door waiting to be let in during a storm.  I reflect on my genealogy thinking back on all my relatives that have tilled the land under my feet.

Reflection
The presentation that I saw was very emotional to me.  I thought that the men that came to speak to us were all very brave.  I have a hard time giving a speech in speech class so they probably have even a harder time to speak about their life and what they have gone through.  Ben, the 19 year old, had the most impact one me because he is so close to my age.  It was crazy to hear how he blew away his life with drugs and how he could have had a baseball scholarship.  Since he did drugs he couldn’t do what he loved to do.  It was sad to hear how the majority of the men who were there got abused as a child, physically and emotional.  I think that is biggest reason why they used drugs.  They never had someone to love them so they took drugs to ease their pain.  They also had no one to talk to them about things that have negatively affected them.  The only people they talked to was people who also took drugs.  When the teachers left the room, the lady asked the students is they knew anybody who has taken drugs.  It was crazy to see all the hands go up.  About 2/3 of the seniors put their hand up.  This means that there are even more underclass men who know someone who has taken drugs.  I personal know many people who have taken drugs.  I think it is sad to hear the stories the men said and then to see all the people I know who could end up like them.

Helen Keller Narrative

Answer the following:
1. What did you think of this narrative?
2. What was most interesting or engaging about it?
3. What surprised you?
4. Did this change your outlook on Helen Keller at all? Why or why not?
5. Copy and paste three examples of vivid detail and imagery that helped enhance the story
6. How can a narrative be more engaging than something like a biography? Why is it important to get someone's personal perspective?
7. Make a bulltted lists of some things you could write a narrative about

1. I thought this narriative was very imformative about Helen Keller.  I did not know much about her before, but after reading this i learned a lot.

2.  The most interesting thing in the narrative was how Helen Keller learned words from Anne Sullivan by writing them on her hand.

3.  What surprised me was how fast Helen picked up the words and how she never quit learning new words.

4. This did change my outlook on her because i always thought that she would give up on trying to learn words and other things, but she never did and i thought that was really cool and brave of her.

5.  Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog, when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in, and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore with plummet and sounding-line, and you waited with beating heart for something to happen?

As the cool stream gushed over one hand she spelled into the other the word water, first slowly, then rapidly.

In the still, dark world in which I lived there was no strong sentiment or tenderness.

6.  It is important to get someones personal perspective because it allows the reader to see how the narartor feels in the story.

7. something that has effected your life
   personal experience
a trip you took that you liked
